The Pink Moon Is Rising — And We're Celebrating With You!

What April's most magical full moon means, and why we chose it as the heart of everything we do

Pink Full Moon in a Night Sky Image with Flowers

Every April, something quietly extraordinary happens in the night sky.

The full moon rises — as it always does — but this one carries a name that has been passed down for centuries. The Pink Moon. And if you've ever wondered where that name comes from, the answer is more beautiful than you might expect.

It's not about the color of the moon.

The Pink Moon takes its name from Phlox subulata — wild ground phlox, one of the first flowers to bloom across North America each spring. Long before weather apps and almanacs, Native American and early colonial communities named each month's full moon after what was happening in the natural world around them. When that low carpet of soft pink blossoms appeared along forest floors and hillsides, people knew the season had shifted. The cold had broken. The earth was waking up.

The Pink Moon became a marker of renewal — a signal that it was time to plant, to begin, to step back outside and re-engage with the world.

We've always thought that's a perfect reason to light a candle — with ritual and intention.

Here in Duncans Mills, where the redwoods meet the Russian River, and the pace of life still follows the rhythm of the seasons, the Pink Moon feels like it fits us.

When we opened the doors of Duncans Mills Candle Co., we were planting something too — a small shop, a big dream, and a belief that fragrance has the power to mark moments, shift moods, and call people home. We chose the Pink Moon as our symbol not because it's pretty (though it is), but because of what it means: new beginnings, natural beauty, and the quiet magic of spring in Sonoma County.

This year, we're celebrating the Pink Moon, once again.

On Saturday, April 11, from 2 to 5 PM, we're throwing a party in the heart of Historic Duncans Mills. There will be live music by the Bohoss Boogie Boys, a DIY Fragrance Bar where you'll blend and take home your own signature scent, a complimentary Rosato tasting by Muscardini Cellars poured at Sophie's Cellars, tarot card readings by local writer and reader Tania Pryputniewicz, a Charm Bar to create a necklace or bracelet by Mason James, a Kids Candle Bar with grab-and-go wax beads, the Spring Flourish art show at Christopher Queen Gallieries, and so much more!

Pink attire suggested. It's become our tradition!

Because that's what the Pink Moon has always been about — not something rare or distant, but something that comes around every April to remind you: this is a good time to begin again.

We hope you'll begin it with us.
