The Village

A small Sonoma Coast village along the Russian River, about 80 of us.

Duncans Mills is where redwood forest meets coastal fog — a cluster of restored wood-frame buildings on the Russian River, founded in the 1860s as a lumber-mill town and held in shape since the railroad came through. The slow that happens here is the rewarding kind, the kind that only happens when a place is small enough to know itself.

L'Atelier Fragrance Bar

The only sommelier-led fragrance experience on the Sonoma Coast.

An hour at the table. A custom bottle to take home. The reason most travelers come.

The Experience

Stephanie Culen, Certified Sommelier — guiding scent.

At Duncans Mills Candle Co. and the L'Atelier Fragrance Bar, we sit you down at a vintage table dressed like a tea party — but instead of tea, the bottles hold fragrance oils in warm amber glass.

You smell. You compose. You adjust. You leave with a one-ounce bottle of a fragrance that is yours alone — a perfume, a body mist, or a room spray. Your choice. Sessions are kept small — up to six guests at a time.

What you're getting isn't a craft kit; it's the same approach a sommelier takes to a wine list, applied to fragrance. Top, heart, and base notes. Raw materials chosen with intention.

The Candle Shop

Crafted by hand in the workshop at the back of the room.

Every candle, room spray, and body product in the shop is made by hand in our workshop. Stephanie composes each scent herself, drawing on her training as a Certified Sommelier.

The scents are place-named: Bodega Bay, Jenner, Russian River, Sea Ranch, Duncans Mills itself. Soy wax, cotton wicks, glass vessels. Made for the West Sonoma Coast it draws from — redwood, fog, sea salt, the green note of bay laurel after rain.

More to Do in the Village

Antiques, wine, and the road to the coast.

You're not going to be hurried here. Each shop keeps its own hours and has its own personality, and wandering in and out is the whole point. Step into Sophie's Cellars for a bottle worth taking home. Browse the antique shops — Thistledown, Twice as Nice, and Jim & Willies. Find a piece at Christopher Queen Galleries. Spend a slow hour at Poet's Corner Bookshop. Try something on at Harlequin, the couture re-sale that locals know about. And stop into Pig Alley — that's our gift shop, just down the boardwalk.

Ten minutes west, the river meets the Pacific at Jenner — turn north on Highway 1 for the cliff-edged drive to Sea Ranch, or south for Bodega Bay. Forty-five minutes inland brings you to Healdsburg and the wine country tasting rooms.
