Camp Meeker Soy Wax Candle | Limited Edition

Dutch Bill Creek runs cold through the redwoods at Camp Meeker, the way it has since the mill closed. The town built itself twice — once on logging, once on summer — and is now learning to hold onto what’s left.

Melvin Meeker put up his first sawmill here in 1866. By the early 1900s the redwood had largely been cut, and after the 1906 earthquake, what remained went south to rebuild San Francisco. The forest answered the way redwood forests do — slowly, but it answered. Meeker subdivided the land in 1898 and sold one-room cabins for seventy-five dollars, and the town became a summer place. St. Dorothy’s opened on the ridge in 1901 and is still there. The community has since bought back three hundred acres of the forest as open space.

The eucalyptus came later. Planted along the lower river a century ago and never quite domesticated, it grew up alongside the redwoods, the bay, the creek bed — invasive, persistent, threaded through the marine air.
