Cazadero is how far in you have to go. The highway narrows. Cell service drops. Moss covers everything that has stopped moving. The trees are taller than the ones you drove past.

Caz Woods holds that quiet.

Palo santo opens — warm and resinous, the scent of something being burned on purpose. Moss through the middle, earthen and lush, the floor of the forest after rain. Sandalwood at the base, creamy and deep, the patient weight of wood that has been standing a long time.

It is the smell of the forest after the last house. Of a canopy that closes over. Of being this far in on purpose.
