At Jenner, the Russian River finally meets the Pacific. It has been flowing toward this all along. Mist in the morning, sun on the waves by afternoon, seals at the mouth, cypress on the bluffs — a place named in the 1850s for a Vermont dentist who arrived near the river’s mouth and stayed.
Jenner Sea is that meeting place.
Oakmoss opens — woodsy and lightly sweet, the scent of coastal forest pressed against the ocean. A marine accord runs through it, salt-touched, present the way a horizon is present. Amber at the base, warm and resinous, steady — the thing that holds the whole landscape together.
It is the smell of a place where two things agree to become one. Of mist meeting sunlit waves. Of a coastline that has been itself for a long time.
