Rio Nido
A small light kept on at the bend in the river.
Rio Nido means river nest. In the 1920s, the Tudor lodge above the bend filled with dance music, and the lights stayed on past midnight. Sinatra came. Glenn Miller, Gene Krupa, Ozzie Nelson — they all came. The river carried the sound.
Before the dance halls it was Eaglenest, a quiet 1908 woodland retreat for the Fraternal Order of Eagles, renamed in 1910 from the Spanish for river nest. By the ’30s it had a hundred and fifty cabins, an open-air pavilion, a footbridge to the beach, a penny arcade, a candy store. Most of that is gone now. The footbridge, gone. The arcade, gone. What remains is the lodge, the roadhouse, the river — and a town whose unofficial motto is memories that linger.
Eucalyptus trees line the banks of the Russian River, planted a century ago and never removed. At Rio Nido on a cool morning, you can sometimes smell it — the marine layer climbing the canyon, the river breathing out, the trees that arrived on the railroad and stayed.
Current Pour
White Eucalyptus
Spearmint opens it, bright and cold — the first breath of a morning still in shadow. Eucalyptus through the heart, clean and quiet, the green of leaves that have been damp all night. Juniper at the base — the marine air that arrives without a sound and stays.
Current scent: White Eucalyptus · This pour rotates. Future editions of Rio Nido may carry a different fragrance.
